Yes I know, putting an XTR mech on a 90’s MTB is complete overkill, but hey this is just for fun. My question, was anyone previously able to make it work? Will I be able to find a BB that allows me to put the XTR crank in or do I need to put a square taper (It’s a 68) in from the parts bin?

Depends how particular you are on performance, I have ultegra on my 90s bike, it works. Do it and find out I guess?
Xtr is a line from Shimano. If you’re asking if hollow tech cranks with external bearing BB can be used, the answer is yes

Derailleur is worth more than the frame, now that is xbiking, only one way to know if it will work
If your new HTII bottom bracket is 68mm wide, it’s plug and play.
If it’s 73mm, common MTB standard, then you just need two spacers and you’re good to go!
Boost cranks? You’ll run into problems
IIRC an XTR crank is fit to a 73mm bb shell? You can check this spec with si.shimano.
If it is the case you’ll need two 2.5mm spacers for the bb to make up that difference.
A HTII crank will absolutely work on that frame. Mtn HTII cranks come with 3 spacers and the instructions from shimano will tell you to put 2 on the DS and one on the NDS. In practice, i found when putting HTII cranks on vintage bikes you usually need the chainline to be closer to the center line. You can do this by putting 1 spacer on the DS and 2 on the NDS. Putting 3 on the NDS wont work because you are running out of threads on the NDS bearing.
It’ll work, I’m running XTR M9000 11 speed on an old Nishiki, works flawlessly.

11 speed derailleur on an 8 speed cassette? I’d be more concerned about making that work.

I need one bike with a wild paint job in my collection. All my bikes are pretty boring.
Dunno much about these bikes, but that frame is beautiful, sorry I can’t help. I come from a BMX background, I’m uninformed here, but I’m thinking you might be able to find a crank set, or some kind of adapter to fit whichever cranks you to on there, I’m just guessing though

At least one of my ‘90’s bikes has XTR parts, but it’s also 90’s XTR.
Soak that bad boy in some oxalic first and it’ll clean up that rust
You’re going to be looking at custom wheel build to get a hub that has the free hub body to fit the new SHIMANO mountain cassettes. As long as you take the time to check for any compatibility issues you should be ok. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to talk a knowledgeable bike mechanic personally when ordering your parts.
