I noticed this deformation when pinching the rim. The video was sent to the manufacturer and their response was (tl;dr: dont worry) “Please do not worry. It is normal. When you are riding the bike, the force is transmitted onto the vertical side of the rim and the joint points of the nipples and the spokes but not the lateral side of the rim. In order to make the wheel both light and stiff, we reinforce the strength of the rim edge and decrease the weight of the lateral side of the rim.”
This seems like something that shouldn’t be happening with the rim. Any advice how to elevate this with the manufacturer?

Uh yeah don’t squeeze it, problem solved.

The manufacturer is right, carbon is very strong is some directions and not in others. Squeezing forces, like you show in the video, are not something a rim experience from riding, so it’s a non issue

DON’T DO THAT!
Also, this is normal. That part of the rim functions more as a fairing than a structural component. But, it is still structural. Don’t squeeze it.
