As my affinity for cycling deepens, I often find myself exploring the local unpaved paths of Coyote Hills here in the Bay Area. More nature. Less vehicular traffic. More untraveled paths to travel upon.

Do I mount pathfinder pros in 32s (based on the internet I can) and gain a little more confidence in the more gravely bits? (Currently on 700c30 GP5000)

Or do I pull the trigger on a dedicated capable bike (Cannondale Topstone 3 L?) and get into things where 700x40s feel at home.

  1. If you’re riding gravel like that most of the time, you’ll be totally fine with your tarmac. I’ve ridden paved streets worse than that. Looks fun though.

  2. Those paths will feel so much better and be faster on 40 or 45mm tires. I’ve ridden stuff like that on my gravel bike with 32mm road tires and 45mm gravel tires and while I definitely didn’t die on the 32s, it’s unreal how much nicer the bigger tires are.
