5000m of altitude incline in only 180km of distance? That’s Montenegro! We spend a week in this mountainous country in September 2022, cycling south to north. Coming from Albania, we immediately noticed a change in vegetation….and with greener valleys and lakes or ponds at the wayside, also an increase of mosquitoes! These little devils hunted us whilst we were sweating like we were sitting in a Finnish sauna when climbing the first mountains in Montenegro.
The adventures continued when we booked a accommodation to shower off the sweat (and tears 😉) of an exhausting stage. When we arrived we were faced by a little room without running water….the area was cut off from water supply due to a drought!
And if this was not enough (and in great contradiction) the next day we were forecd to stay another night in the water-free accommodation, since crazy thunderstorms flooded the area.
To finish our tumultuous stay in Montenegro, just 10km before crossing the border to Bosnia we were faced with our first flat tire after almost 3500km on the road.

Inclines can be terrible, so hard that it's not a pleasure to ride any more for me. That's why I recently decided to travel by ebike. Sure, it's not so environmentally friendly but at least it's better than a car.
Thanks for not sugar-coating the hard bits! Days can be tough – sometimes the terrain, sometimes the weather, sometimes your own mental state. And it is important for would-be bike tourers to know that it isn't all down-hills and soft campsites. But, with luck, the good outweighs the bad. And wow, a 1000m downhill erases a lot of the despair getting to the top!
On those mornings when the tent is soaking wet, do you pack wet and the lay out to dry somewhere along the route or do you wait until dry to pack?
Another great video and really enjoying your journey, thanks very much for sharing
What a stunning scenery, cinematic shots are spectacular here. Love your composition here. 🔥🔥
You two are such excellent company. Alex was non stop chatter, I feel I belong with you on your voyage. These countries with mines, very scary. Take care.
I am surprised you didn't invest in a water filtration device because of your travels through
so many countries!?
Thanks for sharing this with us. Safe travels!
Was there no water at all? Could you not have a water filter or two? We carry 3 ways to purify water depending how questionable the water is.
Great guys thanks. I’m checking out your vids as we will be riding from Zagreb to Athens in September. Good luck and all the best
When hauling a bike it is easier to attach an old cut tube around your hips and the other end to the seat post. I also attach a plastic or metal hook to the ends to make attachment easy. The springy rubber makes it less tiresome as the pressure isnt constant.
