There are two over the counter ones you donβt need an RX for in the US. The Dexcom Stelo and the Abbott Lingo. The Lingo requires an IPhone for their app. Both can be ordered online. Both are much cheaper than paying full price for the others if your insurance wonβt cover the others.
I'm in the U.S. and have been blessed with amazing insurance. The issue is I can't get a glucose monitor because my A1-C is good and I'm not pre-diabetic. I'm insulin-resistant. It's very frustrating that I have diabetes to obtain that.
Sadly, as of January 2025, the app for the Libre 2 is no longer available in Germany; the company also charges an extra fee if you return your purchase.
They overcharge insurance companies and if you buy it yourself, it is about 100/month. Not cheap in US, but less expensive than with insurance. You may qualify for a free trial on the manufacturer's website.
Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System is available without a prescription. It comes 2 in a box each working for 14 days. I paid $99 for the box. If you commit to a longer term use it is discounted.
So is there any truth in statement that non-diabetic people using CGMs are depriving diabetics from getting them on the NHS. I think that is BS but everytime I discuss this on the internet, I get piled into by diabetics.
You would think the pharmaceutical companies would get the FDA to allow these to be sold without a prescription. Not wanting to sound political, but maybe Trump will loosen the regulations of the FDA.
As of 1/1/2025 the options in the US changed. The Freestyle Libre 3 is still a competitive choice–but very idiosyncratic. It really needs trsining and supervision, and the maker fails to explain many of the shortcomings and issues with the device. A good start, but not a panacea.
Big pharma corruption. I thought doctors gave prescriptions because you can harm yourself with certain medications. How is a glucose monitor going to hurt you? They only want to help you for major profits. The way we have been poisoned w food for decades they should be handing out monitors to everyone for free.

In Italy if you have low living income or you can't afford it, after diagnosis and prescription, the hospital gives you the reader for free, then all sensors for free! even delivered straight to your door! I feel lucky about this so for gratitude, I try to help other people that can't afford other medicines. Also pets with diabetes that don't receive insuline or sensors for free π€
