Hello,

I have at my fingertips a three bikes that I got for a pretty low cost overall not long ago and a Kona splice I commute with that I bought 3 years ago. I need to maintain and adjust my Kona, might just take it to the bike shop next week but I want to learn.

I have an old carbon fiber road bike (high MSRP, decent resale value) that I want to clean up and sell to partially fund my learning. The carbon needs a seat and seat clamp (looks proprietary, 2011 felt ar3) and wrapped handlebars. The pedals are also missing but whoever buys it will probably use clips so I'm thinking some $10 Amazon joints will do there. I think I can list it for $1100 and take any offer over $850. I'm not going to do any adjustments to it, I'm not even sure I'm going to ride it, I'm 250lbs and I might exceed the capacity. Might have a buddy ride through the gears and tell me how it shifts.

There's an ancient Schwinn caliente that weighs a ton that I want to fix up and convert to a single speed. I plan to use it on small to medium hills, short trips at first for conditioning and strength training. I have a lot of free time at work so I want to use it there maybe 30 minutes at a time a couple times a day. My thought is single speed for durability, it'll be left outside and ridden by myself and others that won't treat it like a princess. It also needs handlebar wrap and cables, pads, and an assessment. It's a friction shift with road bars and these cool brake levers I've never seen before that can be used in downward road position or upright. I want to strip and rebuild it using it to learn basic bike wrenching. I don't know what chainring and cassette combo would be advisable if I wanted to have decent ratio range maybe a 1×3 (is that even a thing?)

Then there's Frankenstein. The frame is a specialized rockhopper comp with chicken wings on 26" wheels, a mismatched stem that pushes the bars maybe 6 inches forward. 3×9 Shimano deore RD M570, not sure the FD right now. The forks are stamped 04 on the bottom but that's all I could see. I haven't ridden in 4 months and this thing climbed the hill behind my house with such ease that I was pretty impressed. Compared to my Kona 3×8 tourney it felt much lighter and more nimble.

Frankenstein is a little big for my wife and a little small (I've liked that in the past) for me. I want to continue to learn wrenching on it and have it primarily for the wife to ride with me and for me to just quickly air up and go for a ride. No rack maybe a chain breaker and master link with a spare tube, levers, and inflator under the seat. My Kona has a rack, plastic mud fenders, lights, phone mount, a top case with tools and spare parts, extra hanger bracket, patch kit, master links, $20, socks….. Everything I need to make it to work on time. The Kona just feels bulky and slow to get off the rack. I feel like I'm weighed down by all the gear and I can't go have fun, I worry about my rack and bags walking off if I lock it up outside the bar for a couple hours.

TL;DR I need a seat and pedals to resell the carbon. Need advice on the caliente that I want to exercise with at work. I'm curious what you think of the Frankenstein that seems to have decent parts mismatched but I kinda like it. I'm also looking for resources to learn how to work on the Schwinn and the specialized.

I should mention I found this site for the Schwinn
