this is my first time riding it through the snow i felt good and in control and going fast. I need to tune it up I think and learn a bit about it. Could you guys tell me more about the friction control mechanism on this bike?

They look like Suntour Power ratcheting shifters. They have a neat little “click” as you move them, but the clicks do NOT correspond to one gear changeing. The right lever controls the rear derailleur, the left controls the front. You want to avoid “crosschaining,” which is where you are in the small front gear and the small rear gear at the same time, or large front and large rear.
Seat post is a bit low, then you see the head tube.
