I think I over tightened a stem bolt cuz it’s now just a spinning mess.

Tried cleaning up the dirty bolt/hole, and this little spring looking scrap metal fell out. Unfortunately, I tried using another stem bolt and it also just spins. Any ideas whether I need a new bolt, new stem, or what to do? Wanted to check before shelling out for a new stem..

If nothing else, anyone got 35mm stem recs? Looking at Oneup probably

Cheers

  1. Springy thing are the stripped threads? You can drill and tap to a bigger thread and get a bigger bolt, or set a heilcoil, or get a new stem

  2. that’ “spring” is the thread that you just pulled out. It’s new stem time and also would probably recommend a torque wrench to avoid this in the future.

Look. Shit happens, but it’s more Boolean than variable. It’s not stripping, it’s stripped. The soft aluminum stem is stripped, not the steel bolt.

While you could repair it. If you don’t already have the stuff it’s cheaper to replace. Stems are cheap. Don’t get too wrapped up in brands or weight. Save your money for a torque wrench. Probably could use two. A low scale and a high scale 1/4”

Lower torque stuff is harder than higher torque and requires finesse. If you are in the PNW stop by Portland and I’d be happy to give you a torque seminar for the price of a six pack.
