Just bought myself my dream bike – Surly steamroller (2017) and on installing a miche primato crankset I’ve found that the spider doesn’t have space and is rubbing against the chainring, I could install a wider bottom bracket but I fear this will mess with the chainline?

  2. You need a longer BB spindle. This will change your chainline, but that’s the nature of the beast.

That chainstay is already strongly dimpled – not much clearance to eke out there (on round steel chainstays, sometime people will dimple them to add clearance when they run into issues like this, but that’s not really an option here).

If chainline is critical here, you may need to look for a different crank that has a less bulky spider at that spot.

You need a niche primo bottom bracket that’s 2-3mm longer. You MIGHT get lucky with a different chain ring bolt and receiver bc it looks like that is what’s catching the frame? I ran into this with White Industries cranks and just bought wider bb. Never noticed or looked back. Stupid niche primo parts. These are the travails of building bikes.
