If you put a good lock on it it will not get stolen. Its more oportunity theft i think but yeah if you have this kind of bike i dont think anyone should leave it on any street in any country. These kind of bikes you take up the stairs in your 2nd floor apartment you dont leave it outside thats asking for trouble. I think people ride older bikes in amsterdam because they get scratched anyway so you dont care and dump it in a rack with 100 other bikes. Buy a Abus granite ART4 or ART5 put it againt a pole and that bike frame will not get stolen.. problably just the wheels.. )
I moved to the Netherlands last year. I have 2 bikes. One is a 2000β¬ road bike, which I keep inside and ride only for pleasure, and the second one is an old bike I bought for 100β¬, which I ride anywhere where I have to leave it on the streets.
When my dad lived in Amsterdam he bought 3 bikes eventually said sod it and just started taking whatever bycicle wasnβt locked and just leaving it there once he got where needed to go.
Yeah bike helmets lull people I to a false sense of security and your chances of sustained a mild head injury are deceased but your chances of dying in a road accident are substantially higher! Unfortunately people don't like facts that are contradictory to their assumptions
Daarom heb je een skere stadsfiets en als het je hobby is nog een 'echte' fiets voor de lange afstanden. Maar die moet je wel in een schuurtje zetten hoor, anders is ie zo gestolen
In the uk literally everyone hates cyclists, I'm fairly sure bikes get stolen here just to get them off the road where they're usually wobbling about at 15mph holding up traffic next to an unused cycle lane π
A road racing bike in any old inner city doesn't work because of how incredibly rough the ride is over tram tracks and old street pavers. I got one for free as a student in Amsterdam. I used it as little as possible, tram tracks seriously hurt because of the very stiff frame and tires. However, i can wholeheartedly recommend getting an actually proper bicycle – and a motorcycle lock to chain it to something – because it makes getting from A to B much smoother, more comfortable and faster. I heavily dislike the bicycles with only a backpedal brake. In the rain, down a bridge they offer too little stopping power to make a safe emergency stop. And since all cyclists except yourself are stupid, you'll sooner or later have to stop for someone doing it wrong while you yourself are obviously being the perfect cyclist. So yeah. 3 gears, 2 brakes, 1 luggage rack is the minimum equipment for a comfortable, safe and somewhat quick cycle ride in the netherlands.
Tempted to go to Denmark with a bike and helmet, get bullied and then show them my massive scar on my left temple and tell them how I nearly died or became a vegetable at age 10 because I didn't wear a helmet.
7 hour surgery during which my heart stopped, my parents were told I'd most likely be a vegetable or dependent for life.
Don't waste money on something that's likely to get stolen. Get a cheap bike and spend what you would have on tools you can use to steal other's bikes.
I had a pos bike that had its rear wheel's axes shattered. I wasn't sure how to get rid of it since it was annoying to ride, but one day someone stole it. I was like wow thanks bud!π
No one cares if you wear helmet or not or how good or smooth your bike is. The only person that cares is the guy that will find it in the bike park with a bolt cutter.
There's One place where I live where every single bike has at least been stolen once.. Except for the bright aqua bike that's COVERED in duct tape. It still works, perfectly fine, but no one dares
I have a three wheeler due to medical problems i have a helmet to and a harness to attatch myself to the bikeπ π i get a lot of looks since im so young

As a dutchie. I have never seen some bullied for wearing a helmet while ridding a bike. Maybe its province specific.
Bike should never be more expansive then it's chain lock

I ain't buying such an expensive bike only for it to get stolen π
There are people who deliberately ugly fly their expensive bikes so that they don't stand out and become targets.
I give it about 40 minutes before an illegal immigrant steals it π
Ive never bin bullied for wearing a helmet.
I have a "crappy" bike, but I still always park next to a good looking one. So my chances of it not being stolen are higher haha
When you park, always make sure there's a prettier bike in the bike rack. And double locks, of course.
πππ
Its so it doesnt get stolen
