This is first time buying a bike – for years I used a hand me down from my dad until it kaput.

Here is what I'm looking for

  • comfortable commuting on big city roads (think many random potholes that I may occasionally hit) for up to an hour / 10 miles. Comfort to me means both the position on bike, and the amount of effort I'm exerting to pedal. The hand me down felt like I was fighting the road / high friction tires – I want to feel like I'm gliding through the streets!
  • large frame – i'm over 6' tall
  • able to carry a load of 2 toddlers / young kiddos and keep them safe (supporting weight, braking quickly). Ideally they'd sit behind me over rear tire (like this), but open to carting them behind me as well.
  • budget – open to getting new or used. ideally is under $500 but open up to $1000.

given all that, what brands/models should I look into?

thank you!

I sell bikes to people like you all the time.

Lets get one thing out of the way though, you’ll not get both ‘safe’ and ‘able to carry a load of 2 toddlers’ in the same bike for $1000. The accessories to accommodate additional passengers can cost $500 alone.

Check out [Yuba](https://yubabikes.com/) and the [Specialized Haul LT](https://www.specialized.com/us/en/haul-lt/p/277758?color=442434-277758&searchText=91023-9000U). This is what you are really looking for.

You might be able to find these used if you are in a big city. I cannot recommend a bike like what you’ve pictured. Those cheap Temu, Aliexpress, Amazon bikes are dangerous. No ifs, ands, or buts, about it.

Edit: I assumed you were looking for an ebike because you pictured an ebike. The [Surely Big Dummy](https://surlybikes.com/bikes/big_dummy) is the OG non-powered cargo kid carrier bike.
