E10 fuel in Great Britain is cheaper but E5 has more energy and allows you to travel further. Which fuel is better value and is there a benefit to buying the more expensive fuel?

  1. super is petrol in germany, it comes from a time where in 70s there was "normal" and "super" and i dunno what exactly happened but "normal" went away and "super" was the norm
i guess super premium is probably for the countries that dont have good fuel quality

  2. in germany, e5 and e10 have the same octane (95). super plus has 98, which is mostly for sports cars or some older cars used it as well for some reason. shell has 100 octane with a max of 0.8% ethanol, aral (bp) has 102.
personally, on a turbo charged car you can feel the difference, especially if it has turbo lag. same with premium diesel fuels.

  3. Hi Richard
While in UK the normal fuel is 95 Octane, it's 91 Octane in India so could you please tell me if my Octavia should need a 95 Octane as mentioned in my user manual but the service manager didn't say that it's needed..

I am confused as the user manual says one thing and service people the other

Just FYI.. my car is E10 compliant so that part is taken care of

  4. I use E5 in my lawnmower and blower and I use Aspen 2 (zero ethanol) in my chainsaw. The high ethanol content in E10 dissolves seals and diaphragms in the Carburettors.

  5. I really want to tank E5 to keep my car running better over time, but the difference in price is just too much for a student like me. It's about a 20 cents per liter difference here. €2.00 for E10 or €2.20 for E5. It's absolutely ridiculous. But I bought a really, really nice car that I plan to drive for years, and the previous owner took very good care of it, only ever put E5 in the tank. I really can't decide what to tank

  6. As a new driver that's been driving for about a week and a half, I just filled up this morning, my car is a Ford Fiesta EcoBoost that takes E10, after filling up I only just noticed I used E5 in my E10 car, after looking at this video and researching on Google, I was worried if I had to replace my fuel tank mixing E5 with my E10 lol. As long as it's unleaded, that's cool. The E5 I filled up on was V-Shell Power with 99 Octane.

  7. I was waiting for real life values of mpg from each type and/or real pounds/mile. I can search for scientific tests, but real life matters more than closed chamer tests.

  8. So best is to get fuel got no ethanol at all as won’t get it water buildup when car stand still for long time and fuel won’t get bad? I find this topic very interesting as prices in my country (Netherlands) are high compared to neighboring countries. Also brand makes price high or not BP is lot more pricy than other brands. But comparing 95 E10 of BP with 98 E5 of brand OK ( which they state in my country has 0% ethanol ) it’s only 0,11 euro expansiever per liter. So for 11 cents more per liter is worth the premium fuel of brand OK? Sure 95 E10 of cheaper brand are cheaper then BP but than max different is 20 cents per liter. Also use car more for shorter drives then longer ones most of the time.

What is best solution? 95 E10 of cheapest, 95 E10 of premium brand like BP that got more cleaning additives or 98 E5 of brand that proof not using ethanol.

Does fuel with no ethanol at all runs better then fuel with some ethanol even if tank flap says it’s fine for E10.

Love to know. I hope question is clear. English is not my main language.

I drive VW Golf 7 Variant of 2015 automatic transmission.

  9. When you say you've always filled up with the cheapest possible fuel, do you mean E10 or did you also go to the cheapest petrol stations? (I worry that the super cheap petrol stations have lower quality fuel)

  10. I try to use Momentum 99 if I can. I have a Mini John Cooper Works and it recommends 98 ron in the owners handbook but it will run just fine on 95 ron if I can't find premium (this happened a few weeks ago)

  11. There seems to be a huge difference why some people might choose E5 or E10.
Cost wise you would choose E10 every time.
The reason I choose E5 is because the greater the ethanol the more damage you will do to your vehicle, especially in bikes, over time I think this damage will get worse , I tried E10 , the impression I have is that it seems to block your fuel path.
Any fuel which leaves you with a greater build up of water in your fuel is a bad idea.
Bottom line is the price difference between E5 and E10 and that old saying, "you get what you pay for".
I've been advised not to put E10 in my bike and especially if you store in the winter months as the excess water causes corrosion therefore and expensive bill to unblock and clean out corrosion, even worse in winter months.

  12. 95RON is standard?! Here in the states that would be 91 AKI(Anti-Knock Index). Our standard fuel is 87 AKI which is 91 RON.(Sometimes in mountainous places they have 85 because of the reduced air pressure). Is this why fuel in GB is more expensive than the states?

  13. I use M15 plus 5 percent ethanol, awesome fuel that raises octane from 90 Ron to 98, or 95 to 100, great stuff. I theoretically get 10% gas mileage because the fuel has 10% oxygen content but I somehow always get better mileage, especially in traffic, I think the reason is because I can lug the engine without pinging with methanol than even 98. Man especially in summer, you know how it feels when you get stuck in traffic and your car just want to stall unless you rev it to like 2000rpm, with methanol you can do 1500 or less and the engine does not vibrate like its about to explode

  14. I watch my fuel economy like a hawk, I barely noticed a difference when they brought in E10.

My record highest tank was done using E10 fuel @81.1mpg, before that my record was around 78mpg using E5 (before the switch to E10)

  15. What about in higher performance sports cars? They recommend premium but say you can use 95. I've personally never used 95 since I've owned it. One occasion I used 97. But mostly use v-power.
