Hi – was hoping for some help. I braked hard avoiding a child the other week, and my rear brake cable appeared to snap. Upon further inspection, it didn't snap, but now pulls through on the (brass?) piece that's highligted on this photo. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tpZWp2_AJMc/VUicXLlrb_I/AAAAAAAAANM/5HX_nj21IQI/s1600/clevis.jpg

I've attempted to set this back in place, but the cable end won't hold in that rotating piece, it just pulls straight through. Perhaps this has worn and expanded over time?

Unsure of my model – I think it's pre 2003 and in pretty good condition apart from this. It uses the old 10 degree levers, and I'm wondering if it will be a pain to find a brake cable that comes with the somehow correct size end stop, or if it's just worth replacing those old plastic body levers entirely with the newer model levers and cables.

Any help would be much appreciated – I'm not confident in the bike shops near me with the Brompton, does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

  1. brilliantbikes on

The newer brake levers will give you better braking power – as the nylon had a tendency to flex slightly under braking

If your brakes have the “open clevis” design then you should really replace them – as there is a possibility that one time when you brake the cable will just pop out of the lever (even unknowingly) and next time you try and brake there will be nothing there

  2. I’ve tried many different levers. I would recommend to stick with the original ones. They can be bought pretty cheap online now as there’s plenty of owners upgrading their stock for some aftermarket bling. I won’t pay retail though 🤣
