Hi folks, interested in any thoughts and experiences on modifying a shopping trolley with a MIK adaptor to then attach to a carrier plate on front or back of bike.

Idea is, arrive at market, use trolley to buy weeks groceries, attach to bike, ride home.

In terms of weight distribution, while I understand that panniers are better for centre of gravity, I’ve been cycling for quite a while with a less secure version of the above scenario (using bags in crates etc and it’s not a long way so I’m not too worried.

Thinking something like attached, but I’m concerned that the crate would just tear due to forces applied when going round corners etc. anyone had any experience with this scenario?

  1. Those small wheels will never roll down a street. You would have to replace them with something much larger and that won’t be easy.

  2. Absolutely do not do this. The trolley in the image has tiny little wheels that are not in any way designed for the speed and the irregularity of a road surface. Same goes for the overall structure and its ability to hold up to on-road use. That’s not even getting into the stability and tracking when moving to a connected bike at speed.

If you want something along these lines, get a bike trailer that suits your needs. It will handle correctly and also provide for proper attachment, which is perhaps more complicated than you think when accounting for sufficient independent movement so that it handles safely in motion. A kid or dog trailer might be most suitable if you’re wanting something you can wheel around a store, and some convert to use as a stroller. That said, stores have shopping carts, and when I take my bike trailer to shop, I simply leave it with the bike and load it up from the cart after I check out.

  3. i worked in a bakery once and underneath the maintenance guys modified hand trucks to act as trailers.

They also modified kids bikes to roll under the building to get around.

    It worked pretty good.

I’ll see if i can find a photo.

but yeah, those wheels are way too small and flimsy.

Apologies, I have not communicated my intent clearly. I have racks, front and back, on my bike with MIK plates. Currently I have crates clicked into them. I would like to use a trolley and then lift the trolley onto the rack, and click into place on the rack with an adaptor plate
