This video showcases a safer cycle route between two great London Children’s Hospitals and is part of a series called Cycle for Health in London ( @Cycle4Health ).
The objective is to encourage health & social care workers and patients & visitors to participate in more active travel on their trips to London health locations.
The World Health Organisation recently reported that children in England & Wales are among the most inactive in the world.
The video argues that movement is essential for the growth & development of children in preparation for adulthood but that cycling to school and play is suppressed by safety concerns.
This journey showcases some of the emerging cycling infrastructure that is enabling more people to choose cycling for their journeys around London.
Health care workers can use safer routes to become role models by engaging in active travel behaviours such as walking or cycling.
But much more needs to be done by the Mayor, Transport for London and London Boroughs to liberate children so they can cycle safely either independently or with their families.
The evidence is clear, we need more low traffic neighbourhoods and more and better protected cycle lanes on busy roads.
If the streets can made safe for children they will be safe for all Londoners.
