Hello all, I replaced my bike chain recently from a very rusted to a new chain and having skipping problems. No problems before and the chain was the same size side by side. I adjusted the rear derailleur checked the tensions, all shift into gear perfectly however when pedaling up hill my chain slips or skips teeth. This bike is from the 80s and on visual inspection the rear cassette is in great condition I cleaned up the derailleur and friction shifters to see if that would help but still the same results. This only happens when I am riding the bike, it spins fine when on a stand. Any suggestions on what to try next?

I had an almost identical issue to you on my 80’s road bike. It always skipped on the high freewheel cog when putting high torque on the pedals. The solution for me was getting a new freewheel/cassette.
Sometimes, a cassette will be worn out even if it visually looks OK. The older chain didn’t skip because it likely wore down at the same time as the cassette, so they meshed correctly despite both being worn.
If I was a betting man, which I am, I would say you most likely need to replace the cassette, especially if you’ve already adjusted the derailer and it shifts fine quick question is it only happening in the smallest gear in the back or is it doing it on all of them and if you get a chance, take a picture of the cassette and post it
Just get a new casette and chain. 40 bucks mb
