Unpopular opinion: nice clean negative stem with no rise “flat top” handlebar.
Example: UNO stem with Ritchey handlebars

Unless you need the space above the stem, cut and go flush cap, otherwise I can’t see where improvements can be achieved.

I’d pet the puppy, they look grumpy but still sweet.
I’d add inner bar ends (antlers) to your handlebars or get a bar with integrated ones, like koga denham, crazy bars etc

Another golden, then nobody will even look at the bars

Depends on if you want to stay on 31.8 bars or not. If you size down to 25.4 or 26 you have some options to clean up the cockpit by just grabbing a quill stem.
Personal rule of thumb for my builds:
Bars with rise look best with a downturned stem angle and then vice versa with no rise bars.

No advice because my rockhoppers stem is quite ugly.
I love your old pup though! He has that old dog DGAF look that my 14 y/o golden used to get. RIP Monty…

What brand/model are the tires? They look interesting.
If you like the look kf high rise/bmx bars try that. Otherwise you can put spacers under the stem to cover the adapter which can make it look a little bit cleaner.
1. A classic quill / 25.4 bar. If you can’t find any quills short enough, you can’t always get something with a little more sweep.
2. Please pet that dog for me. My family’s golden recently passed, and this one is a spitting image. He deserves pats and belly rubs and maybe half a hamburger every now and then, when nobody’s looking.

That’s as clean as quill to threadless gets.

Spend more money! Ball out on a 1” threadless fork cut to the perfect height and a sick stem with a 1 1/8” shim!
Or you can get a quill stem adapter that is a bit lower profile and sets in deeper. Sometimes I even throw on a 1 1/8” spacer to get rid of the little neck part so it looks a bit cleaner.
I’d get something with a removable faceplate and get some Surly Sunrise bars so there wasn’t so much steerer happening personally… bonus points if you go with a BMX stem and skip the 22.2 to 31.8 shim

I can’t help you. However, my hard rock has a nitto technomic stem and a set of riser bars

Just lower the adapter and buy a black 80 or 90 mm stem 🤷

Use a classic quill stem like what it probably had stock. That’ll clean up the cockpit.
Fill the 25.4-31.8 gap with spacers to begin with to mimic a modern setup.
Try a different 31.8 handlebar style, get creative to fill your needs.

These appeared on amazon a few months back, variable stems with the pivot at the 45 degree (rather than directly on top or in front of the stem) that looks pretty clean to me.

Make it so that the parts cost more than the frame[NITTO X CRUST UI QUILL STEM](https://crustbikes.com/collections/stems/products/nitto-x-crust-ui-stem?variant=47663884632375)
