Pic for attention.
Like the title says I’m looking for a solution to this problem where I’m wearing my puffy jacket around the campfire and an ember burns a small hole(s) in the jacket. I don’t want to damage my nice new jacket. I want to stay warm at camp and not be the 1st one to call it a night cuz I got cold by the campfire. Don’t want to be patching my jacket if I don’t have to.
I was wondering if anyone else has this same issue/worry? Anyone have a solution? I was originally thinking like wearing an emergency survival jacket/poncho with the Mylar thermo foil material. But I’m not sure the material (polyethylene) is fire ember safe. Then I tried finding a Nomex material type poncho but found they don’t pack down much. My last idea is to wear the thinnest weight extra large and tall long sleeve wool shirt over my jacket. As natural fibers are less likely to melt or catch fire as synthetics. Any insight or tips is appreciated. Thanks

100% cotton or wool shirt over everything is exactly what I do. Conversely I do have a crumby synthetic insulation puffer that I am willing to get holes in as well.

  2. Wool has natural fire resistance so you might consider investing in a merino sun hoodie or a icebreaker jacket

  3. I find wearing clothes you don’t care about makes them very stain and ember proof. If you even show the slightest regard for your outerwear, you’re screwed.

I’d just wear your dirt bag vibed puffy with pride. Thrifted fashion is pretty hot right now.

  4. The easiest thing to do is resign yourself to it not staying perfect. Just patch any holes that occur. The patches will be memories/badges of honor from previous trips.

Several years ago I was on a hiking trip with my brand new Patagonia jacket & I got a couple holes from fire embers. When I got home, I sent it to Patagonia & they patched it so well I couldn’t tell unless I knew where to look. The repair was free & the sent me a card thanking me for repairing rather than replacing it.
