About a year ago I bought Federal Boyd frame. I was happy about it but noticed few srange things. Brake tabs were welded on crooked and the paint was super thin, mainly around tbe dropouts almost not covering the welds. Not talking about the cheap shitty stickers, but I threw those off immediately. But frame holds up great, nice and sturdy.
Today I received brand new TallOrder front hub and… It's rusty straight from the box!? I know its just surface rust, but man wtf? Brand fucking new part and it comes out the box like this?

  1. First, I’d contact the company so they are aware. To me, it looks like it wasn’t greased att he factory. I always disassemble my new stuff and properly grease it.

This is not a issue. Stainless steel still can rust. It’s likely been sitting for awhile and or didn’t have enough grease.
The crooked brake mounts would piss me off.

  3. Those Federal Boyd frames seem to have been a bad batch. Backyard threw a couple up on their ebay and were heavily discounted on the site too at one point. Think there were issues there, that’s not good to hear.

As for the hubs, some of the stock these guys are carrying is like years old at this point due to overstocking. Kind of unavoidable, but yeah, annoying.

everyone says it’s fine, but it is not. Steel part must be stored greased, steel axle, bolts, nuts, etc.

Tis just poor storage and it’s sad. You don’t pay for poor surface finish.

Wont make the part problematic to ride tho.

  5. With so many bmx items being steel and untreated steel as well, surface rust is to be expected. While yeah I get it doesn’t look great, it’s nothing serious. Equally you’ve got a steel axle with alloy cones and you get bi-Metallic corrosion, where two dissimilar materials basically don’t like being in contact unless there’s a barrier (grease) or they’re plated.
Paint has tbh been crap on many bmx frames from every brand you care to name, it’s way more noticeable though on trans and clear lacquer colours as it’s a much thinner finish and usually is straight on to the raw metal.

That rust is just fine. Most of the bmx parts i ordered always have some rust but it dont affect how it rides
