  1. I had a last minute appointment and the only reliable way to arrive on time was to cycle and go on my Brompton. Well I could have gone on a different bike but the roads were wet and that bike doesn’t have mudguards and I only ride it in dry weather.

I knew I probably didn’t want to take it inside because my Brompton would be dripping dirty water, so I took 2 locks with me. Luckily there was a bike parking area opposite across the road to the place I was going to.

I left it for about 15-20 minutes and was half relieved when it was still there when I went back to it after the appointment. It wasn’t a high risk area. This is the first time I’ve lock it in the street after owning my Brompton for half a year.

I leave mine out in Berlin (daytime, busy shopping/pedestrian areas) all the time with little concern. Two locks, to be fair. There’s a first time for everything, I get that, but you have to get on with life too. And are not the latest Kryptonite barrel locks pretty secure??

  3. This is why I still keep an annual subscription to a bikeshare program (Santander in London). At £120/year it’s better than bike insurance since I’d rather not have my bike stolen in the first place…. Those bikes are great for trips to appointments, museums, pub, etc. Plus it doubles as extra training since they are so sluggish.

I am about to purchase a brompton and first I was thinking about getting the flame lacquer frame but I think that would draw too much attention… Hence I think I will go with the good old matt black… Much more stealthy.
