I've just acquired a road bike that I think dates from about 1992. It feels incredibly light and fast (previously I only had a heavy 26" touring bike) and has 700c wheels with 28mm tyres. I'd like to put 32mm tyres on it and use it for lightweight touring, but I'm not sure whether they'll fit. I've looked at Sheldon Brown's table of tyre/rim widths and according to that they should be fine, but can anyone tell me if there will be an issue with the brakes?

You should look into “tire clearance”.

You might be okay, but measure how much space you have at the tightest point of the brakes, fork, rear triangle, and that should let you know how much extra you can get!

  2. Just be 100% sure its not a 27″ 630mm wheel rather than assuming it’s a 700c. Its 1992 but it has old 1970-1980s 10 speed bike vibes. The tyres should have the code on it.
