Have got this vintage miele road bike that ive been riding for the last 5+ years and i think its finally time to upgrade some of the components.
Currently its got a shimano biospace sis 52/42 crankset, exage sport tube shifters, exage sport front and rear derailleur, 6 speed cassette.

Im thinking of upgrading the crankset, shifters (to the ones i can shift without having to reach down to my tube), derailleurs and cassette.
Im looking at going for a 8 or 9 speed cassette and a 50/34 crankset. Been specifically looking at the shimano sora groupset. Im having a hard time finding parts in stock here in Canada, any advice on how i can get parts, should i go into a local bike shop and see if i can buy the parts through them?

  1. I’m very happy with bar-end friction shifters. You could probably swap in a wider range 7 speed freewheel in the frame. I don’t know about minimum width for free hubs. If it shifts smoothly and reliably, you’re already ahead of the game.

  2. For me it’s nice the way it is. It’s an original old school road bike, not for newbies of for commuters. Hard gearing, hard changes etc. It won’t become as comfortable or as light as a newer one.

If you still want to make the changes, you’ll have to change the whole drivetrain, and add brifters derailleurs, of course changing also the cable housing and chain. So try to get a full groupset. Actually you change it all appart from the calipers and the wheels.

  3. That’s a lot of changes. You’ll probably also need to cold set the rear to 130mm and get a new rear wheel with a 130mm wheel hub and correct freehub
