My dad had this old bike from the 70’s that I’m trying to get rideable and I changed the inner tube tonight but noticed this gap between where the axle rests and where it’s supposed to rest. The problem is when it is securely down into the notch the tire is no longer in line with the bike and rubs against the left side of the frame. Any advice?

Hey! Older, horizontal drop-outs like these don’t need the axle to have contact in the back to mount securely. It’s fine for the axle to be anywhere in the drop-out, as long as the quick release lever has enough to hold onto.
After mountain biking times, the vertical drop-out was created to make this part of the bike stronger.
