got this old and rusty GT from a friend. it has been sitting in storage for too long.
as i am a complete noob, I'm wondering what to do with this to make it rideable again.
i guess my first step after cleaning will be replacing the chain and cassette.
will any 7 speed cassette will work?
should have try to make the old groupset work or get a new one? if so, what are good and budget friendly options?
what are my next step?

Hey man, if you want to go the cheap way, I’d just start by cleaning everything cassette, shifters, chain. Buy a chain measuring tool and see if the chain needs to be replaced. If the cables and cables sleeves are cracked or have a sharp bend, change them too, then do a tune up and see from there how it goes already.
New tires, tyre tape and brakes might also be needed if everything is old.

Yes I think you’ll probably be able to fit 8 speed on that thing too. Chain and cassette look like they need to be replaced yep, and maybe check the health of that chainring too.. just post here when you get stuck and everyone will help ya!
