Hello, long shot here, but here goes.
I was servicing my partner's bike and noticed the rear derailleur adapter was cracked. After fiddling, it snapped clean off (pictured). Can I buy the adapter by itself or is this now buy a whole new derailleur?

The RD is fine, what broke is called the derailleur hanger. It’s specific to your bike frame. Look for the hanger and your RD will thread right on to it.

What you call an adapter is known as a derailleur hänger. If you know the exact make and model of bike your Partner has than you can look up which type you need (the hanger is provided by the manufacturer of the bike and not the component manufacturer).
