  1. Looks like you need to properly lubricate your chain.

    Apart from that, I’d say there’s still a lot of life in both chain and cassette. That surface rust will probably go away once it’s lubed and you’ve used it for a few days.

  2. Buy some bicycle chain lubricant and apply it liberally to the chain. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then use an old rag to wipe the excess off. You’ll be fine!

    Don’t use: WD-40, grease, motor oil, olive oil, or anything else that doesn’t say “bicycle chain lube” on it.

  3. It’s fine. You can use a wire brush to remove the surface rust and then treat the chain with your preferred lubricant.
