Seems they're similar, which would you recommend? I used to mountain bike with my buddy 6 or 7 years ago but the bike I'd used was his extra bike and it was custom and very nice. I want something to break back in to mountain biking so any tips and suggestions are appreciated. Thank you!

that comp is so so so much better
spend the extra $100
I had a Rockhopper in the 2010s and it was great on trails in the Chicagoland wooded areas. They weren’t rated-trails so I assume they were all greens/beginner, but I had a lot of fun with that bike for a good price.
They’re ok, I’d want the one with 1x drivetrain.
But in that position I’d also try to save up for a better bike on Jenson USA or a Norco Charger or Trek Roscoe 6 instead.
It’s possible to get a ‘full featured’ bike for 1k now. Dropper, tubeless rims, air fork, hydro brakes, and 1x drivetrain.
But a 1x rockhopper or Marlin is ok too. I just feel like for under 1k its preferable to go used/secondhand or even try Poseidon Norton or Ozark Trail if the bike isn’t going to be an upgrade platform anyway
Tor that money, you should get a modern, tapered headtube. Recommend the Schwinn Axum Comp X or the Ozark Trail Ridge instead. Modern geometry and a tapered head tube on both of those bikes. For the $150 you save on the OTR, you can do some major upgrades.
Worth more than $100 just for the drive train
Go for the comp all day
