I just watched this very informative video from @RoadGuyRob explaining the Valencia St median bike lane. I was apprehensive at first and thought he would have a windshield perspective, but I appreciate that he actually rides a bike on his videos about bike lanes.

Saw his other video about Carmel, IN and now I want to visit that town!

I've been skeptical of bike lanes on median. I have one where I currently live, and I do not feel safe at all riding it. But after watching this, I'm actually convinced this is a very good idea, at least in that context.

I'm not an SF resident, but for any SF residents, what are your thoughts? Did your city council jump the gun too early in removing it?

My two cents is that there is just way too many cars for such very limited space, and it seems the default is to accommodate them.

Thanks.

  1. BicycleIndividual on

For through traffic, a protected bike lane in the center sounds great to me. No risk of dooring. On the other hand it is harder to get in and out of the center bike lane – so you don’t get as many advantages to business along the route from bike traffic.

Parking protected bike lanes have risk of dooring and have visibility problems.

For bike traffic the center lane sounds great (but needs extending). Sounds like the main business complaint is that the bike lane is not being made available to vehicles.
