Much more than the BIRTHPLACE OF MODERN MOUNTAIN BIKES the Marin Museum of Cycling and the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame is a world class museum that houses one of the greatest curated collection of bicycles I’ve ever seen. 150 years of bicycling history is exhibited in a little building in Fairfax, CA just north of San Francisco in Marin County. It’s simply mind blowing that a few passionate individuals have raised the money and pooled resources in a DIY effort to create something this good – but then again, these guys literally invented modern mountain bikes, so it’s really not that surprising. This is hands down one of the most fascinating videos I’ve made to date. I’m honored to share this experience with you. Enjoy!

Cool place. I was down in Dayton a few years ago at the Wright Bros bike shop. That was cool too. Ever been down there?
I lived in Marin from 1970 to the late 70s, and even had one of those inch pinch bombers I'd drag up Mt Tam and bomb down. I still have a 1982 or 83 Stumpjumper 15 speed, total tank of a bike, but its all beat to heck from 20 years of hard riding, its been in storage since the late 90s. I've lived down in Monterey Bay since 1977, but my brother still lives up there, and I've driven by this Bike Museum a couple times and didn't even notice it :O … I HAVE to make a stop there next time I'm up that way.

Somewhere else you should visit if you are ever even close is the Wheels Through Time museum in Maggie Valley, NC. It is not too far (day trip) from Asheville NC. It is a similar museum centering around motorcycles but it does a fair job at showing great examples of the transition from early bicycles to motorized cycles. They have some of the earliest bikes I’ve ever seen that are literally converted bicycles. It is also worth noting that every display is in running condition. As a bike and motorcycle nerd it is a must see.

I love it. Quite awhile ago a guy in Bisbee Arizona had a beautiful bike shop /museum and when I went in he said “everything is for sale “. His wife wanted to travel and he wanted the bikes to be seen. I bought a 1958 Raleigh Lenton grand sport. Gold with a unique suicide shifter did the front drive system you had to reach down between you legs and flip this beautiful lever. Anyway. If you could buy any one of those bike s. What would you buy ? Oh we also bought some amazing prints off his wall. Drawn by a very old Tour de France winner and then colored in by another. All had a guy on a bike in a dreamy countryside.

I know that Robin Williams was a big collector. I wonder if any of these were his. He lived up that way
Pretty sure those are carbide lamps on the early bikes.
Wow, that Breezer at 4:30 has a "leading axle" fork. That was a cool thing in BMX. I still have a 1981 Red Line Pro Line II with a Bottema fork – extended way beyond the axle and just looked so cool.
Another awesome video! You could do a whole podcast on just a couple of those bikes, or one era at a time. Sounds like a good excuse to come back and film next year. I would have loved to see more of that Pierce-Arrow bike. I knew they made beautiful cars (search on Pierce Silver Arrow), but I had no idea they made such amazing bikes. That museum is a national treasure. Thanks for letting us know about it! PS – warning to those who haven't watched this yet: It's going to take more than 59 minutes to watch – you WILL be pausing to look at these works of art 😀
Outstanding place. Wish I would have kept my yellow 1971 Tour De France Motobecane I purchased in in 1972. Loved that bike.
I've never been there but driven it more times than I care to remember – I'm definitely planning a visit on my next visit to Mt Tam.

Actually old bicycles like the Penny Farthing with its solid tires ride better than you’d think- the long spokes of that giant front wheel soaks up a lot of the vibration. I can attest to this as I used to ride one when I was with the circus.
It wasn’t until they moved to our modern “Safety” bicycle design that had two small wheels of the same size that pneumatic tires became a necessary thing. 👍
