I have an old Litespeed road bike. The pawls don't consistently engage, and pretty much every time I begin to ride, I need to do a stationary pedal for about 3-5 min before they even engage at all the first time. Once I do that, it's basically 100% functional as expected for the rest of the ride.

Anyway, I took the rear wheel off, removed the cassette and axle including 2 sets of 9 ball bearings, removed the freehub (12 mm allen key from the non-drive side… something that was very difficult to figure out how to do on the Internet lol).

So now I am holding the freehub body, which itself seems to have a whole bunch of ball bearings. What should I do now to get the pawls (lol where are they even?) to engage consistently?

Thanks in advance!

if you’re lucky, a nice soak of light oil might do the job, no further disassembly required.

Otherwise, the mechanism of the freehub may simply be worn out and needing replacement with a new compatible freehub. sometimes individual pawls and related can be replaced, sometimes not. Compatibility depends on the rest of your hub and axel.
