










Hey everyone! Hoping I could get some input from you all, maybe someone has some Bike Friday experience too… Some background on this one, it’s an older New World Tourist model (with the 1-1/4” headset, and was originally set up with a 3 speed internal sram hub and 9 speed cassette). a buddy of mine bought it from a local bike coop, and I traded him a different model bike Friday that I had for this one. Had the idea of lacing up new wheels and a fresh build.
I removed all the original components. currently have that GXP SRAM crankset on there, originally it had a square taper crankset with a BB spindle that almost seemed comically longer on the drive side. But I realize now that they probably did that on purpose? To make this one work I added a few spacers to the drive side and got it so the right crank arm is about 15mm-ish from the frame, and the Left side is about 19mm-ish. (see last pic with 2 spacers on the right side) is this ok to do?
But then taking a closer look at the rear triangle, it appears like it is bent / or shifted to the right, and the rear wheel is at an angle pointing to the left. (Would make sense if that’s why the right crank arm is closer to the frame?) My only thought is that this is by design because the way it folds? (The hinges have that odd shape but that’s ok, because the rear wheel folds underneath and tucks in to the left of the frame) Taking a closer look at all the pivot points and where it attaches it appears like all is ok? The rear drop out is only about 132mm and the rear hub is 135mm but not sure if that supposed to be like that too. Also to make sure the wheel isn’t the problem I flipped it the other way (gears on left side) and still points to the left like that.
Anyways, before I continue building this I’m curious if this is off? Should I “bend it to the left a little” (it’s steel). Or am I over thinking this and should I just not worry about it.

Maybe double check the frame alignment. You can do this with a piece of string and a ruler:

If you figure out if the back triangle is out or the drop outs are crooked, it could likely be fixed. It might make sense to call around and find a shop that has experience cold setting steel frames, because they will likely have the tools to do it.
