  1. I don’t ride high amounts, but I still need to swap the cassette every 2-5 months, because the chains starts to skip. I clean the drivetrain pretty often, and then lube the chain. I use brushes and a citrus degreaser, the chain looks pretty clean after the cleaning. I use generic chains, which I have swapped every time I swapped the cassette.

Are generic chains this bad for the cassette, or what could be the cause for quick cassette wear?

  2. Do you have a chain stretch measuring tool maybe that is stretched, normally you can run 3 chains to be worn out with the same casette not the other way around.

Months is irrelevant. How many miles (or km) does that represent?

If this cassette wore much quicker than the ones in the past, maybe it’s a counterfeit that uses cheaper metal. Just a guess.

  4. Your chain is the issue. Even the cheapest Shimano chain will last longer than that. As others have mentioned, that chain looks like it doesn’t belong with that cassette, which is likely a major source of the problem. I also have some bad news about your chainrings, they are very worn out. Skipping on the front from worn out chainrings is less common, but it is accelerating chain wear.

PYC chains are a decent alternative to Shimano, I have run PYC on all of my beater bikes/flip bikes and they last well – no different to a basic Shimano chain if you ask me. On my more spenny bikes I tend to go for KMC.

Steer clear of the chinesium amazon chains, they suck.
