I just changed cassettes from a 105 CS-5800 to a CS-HG700-11. However there is some play in the gears. I counted and there are 5 spacers (the same number as the one I took off). The only gears that don’t have an added spacer are the two smallest and three biggest (one piece) which have built in spacing. Any help would be appreciated. The spacers don’t seem to be directional in anyway.

Make sure you torque the locking ring to the NM it calls for I believe it like 25lbs to 30lbs of torque. and also if there were any spacers on your old cassette make sure to put those on to
I don’t think it’s a lock ring issue- I used essentially all my force to tighten it after noticing the issue and it still persists.
You went from a road 11 to a “MTN” 11 speed cassette. Because lower gearing can affectively hang over the spokes without making contact, the freehub can be narrower. On a road cassette you need a wider freehub to make room for all the gears without touching spokes. So you have the wrong cassette for your hub.
Luckily, they make spacers for exactly this problem. Any bike shop dealing in road bikes should have them on hand, and they aren’t expensive. You need a 1.8mm spacer. Enjoy.
Thank you!!!

The bottom schematic of “ROAD 12/11-speed FREEHUB compatibility”. You need a 1.85mm spacer.
