This documentary series follows the community of Jaywick in Essex, where more than half of the residents are living on benefits. High levels of unemployment have turned the once-thriving seaside village into one of the most blighted areas in the country. Cameras capture images of the Brooklands estate, a part of Jaywick that is highly deprived. Episodes show local resident Carl being evicted, landlords inspecting damage to their properties, and a former armed robber from London’s East End living in a caravan that has heating problems.

I used to live in Southend on sea which is not far from Jaywick. I remeber being told as a child "if you do not study or if you do drugs you will end up in Jaywick."

I rented out a couple of houses there years ago. The boiler and the copper got robbed a couple of times, with 6 months in arrears lol. My fault – i should have vetted them better. But on the whole the locals are very friendly. Alot are simply surviving cos they are permanently skint.
