California in particular (which is where i see most of the bmx/hip hop crossover) has always had a sort of “bike culture.” Southern California is kind of ‘ground zero’ for the bmx scene in the 70s/80s and theres always been a klunker/custom bike build culture in LA and the bay. I also think most the 80s/90s babies grew up pedaling around on bmx bikes and hitting little jumps and stuff. Where im at in California all the kids grow up riding bmx, maybe not very seriously, but usually just doing wheelies and hitting jumps. So i’d say its probably just nostalgia for them.

It’s chill. Seeing a legit bike cruising around the Hive video by Earl was neat back in the day. BMX has always been in music though. Shit, 5 Minutes Alone by Pantera- Phil Anselmo is wearing an S&M shirt haha

BMX were popular in the inner city as well as suburbs in the 80s, so there is that. Also, some rappers do ride: in Russia in example the rapper Pharaoh rides and wears a Kink jacket in one of his early (circa 2014) videos, too:
