  1. Pretty much stock Dawes Eclipse City, 22M. Has been great for three years now.

The bike cost about $300 new, and I save $120 a year by not paying the bribe for car parking at my university.

Last month I had to replace both inner tubes and the back tire, but other than that the only maintenance it has needed is cleaning and lubing the chain.

AAA estimates car ownership at an average of $10,000 per year. That’s just for sedans. Riding my “expensive” bike every day paid for itself last month, and every month prior for the last nine years.

By spending $1500 instead of $300 on my bicycle, I have a lighter bike that is better suited for longer rides, I have more durable components that last twice or three times as long before needing replacement, and my bike is more reliable between tune-ups than most cheaper bikes.

In short, I think an investment into a mid-range bicycle is the best transportation dollar going, even better than a budget bike.
