The Trek 970 was a steel mountain bike.

Whatever it is, it looks like a mix of parts from different eras. Cheap shifters, steel fork and threaded headset from the 1980s or early 1990s, aluminum frame circa 2000.

It looks like an OK bike, but not a Trek 970

That is neither the single-year 1983 Trek 970 road bike, or a 1989-1996 Trek 970 Singletrack MTB.

Even if it were a repaint of the 1983 970 with a replacement chrome fork, it would be a lugged frame. And it’s obviously not a mountain bike. So no, it is not a 970.

Whatever it is, it seems like it’s worth $80.

Not vintage, just old, and a curious counterfeiting paint & decal job… possibly a good base for a sporty commuter, and definitely a great decoy bike if you ever get more expensive bikes with more subdued paint & obscure logos which you can’t store inside your home with your coats & boots.

Nice looking brake levers & fork. Brake calipers look okay-good for singlepivots, shift levers look okay. I’d be ready to throw new chain, tires, and Kool Salmon brake pads on it & ride it hard enough to justify new wheels in a years or two.

If you do buy it with intent to ride it, probably post to r/bikecommuting & r/xbiking for opinions & ideas on build-up ideas. We’ll want to see just what headbadge is on it out of pure curiosity. The Bikecommuting sub will recommend removing or covering up of the theft-bait-ey Trek logos.
