I believe van dijk is not the most defensively skilled, although he is the cleaner than most people around, meaning he doesnt need to foul someone to get the job done.
His positioning is really doing most of the work. He is forcing the attacker on either their wrong foot or go the long way round. He does have his speed and strength, so he has the luxury to be positioned like this, as a flick of the ball past him doesn't mean the player will get past him.
