Doesn’t seem all that controversial, I can’t think of one better. Though if we wanna get REALLY controversial, some would argue that Quebec City is a better national capital for mountain biking.

Hard agree. When I lived there, you could throw a stone and you’d be at a different, amazing trail network. They’re constantly working on and improving the trails. The bush is beautiful native new Zealand bush, and through can actually ride through the bush within a few minutes of the central city. There’s everything from coastal rides, huge hills with great views right through to shuttled DH tracks and of course the bush rides. I moved away and have missed the riding there since.

Yeah can’t argue with NZ. But I live in Canberra Australia and there’s 7 trail heads in my town. Not including the 140km loop track that goes round the entire capital that is mainly dirt. There also insane amount of dirt fire roads around our hills. Plus a new trail extension happening this year. PLUS we had a downhill world cup event here in 2006 I think. Everyone here mountain bikes it’s so good

I live next to Makara and yes it is pretty good, we are spoilt here. Other cities will be better but the accessibility of these trails is pretty nuts. Before a minor hiccup with the buses and their bike racks you could bus from anywhere to these trails very easily and it is very pretty. Lots of native bush and LOTR tourists.

NZ (both islands) have incredible trails.
Rude rock near Queenstown will always be special for me.
