    Help! I have an old Peugeot

    I have an old Peugeot I rescued from a classmate in college a few years back and I want to clean it up and make it as original as possible. Well, I can’t even figure out what year it is.. it looks like the frame style of the 1981-83 with the checkered vertical tube style. It says “tube special 103” on it as well. But the sun tour shifters throw me off. I can’t find those in the care log only bottom tube shifters on this frame design. (Will post more pictures tomorrow like the head badge and serial number. Serial starts with Y910 XXXX)

    Thank you in advance! Advice like getting rust off, finding original paint etc is welcome. New to bike restoration and road bikes in general. Grew up MTB mainly

      I tend to “rehab” rather than “restore”. that having been said, you really do want to stop that rust. Wire wheel the rust, sand, prime and paint the bad areas. Get a “close enough” white.

      Keep the Suntour shifters. The original Simplex had plastic components and probably broke.

      SOS or Brillo will do a great job on removing rust from chrome. The steel wool is softer than the chrome plating, yet abrasive enough to remove the oxidized iron.

      My go-to on old French bikes…well, everything, is white tires, seat, and grips/wrap. It’s a striking look.

      THAT FORK. It’s not the original Peugeot fork. It’s from an old cheap 70’s Schwinn Suburban or Varsity and it’s literally a solid bar of steel, (i.e. heavy) so if you can score something made out of an actual quality tubeset it would ride a lot better and weigh a little less. You can see the headset fit isn’t great especially at the crown.
      Guessing the fork was swapped because it was crashed at some point but the frame has no evidence of a crash.
