  1. Love to see your channel growing, ( I think I joined back when it was single digit subs ) anyhow keep it up! I think I can speak for a lot of Dutch people when I say this, through your eyes(and others like the vids you comment on) make us see and appreciate how good we have it, also we don't like to brag or toot our own horns much to stay on subject, so it is great we get to do that vicariously through you guys! Groetjes uit Brabant

  2. You never heard about Veenendaal because it is nothing special Charlie. One out of thousands. And btw cars are not restricted. Roads are less wide and people just behave because they know what its like to drive a bike. Very simple

  3. Dont forget, all these infrastructures do cost tons of money, also to maintain. We also often get praises about our excellent pension and our social security. But all these things cost A LOT of money and have to be paid from taxes. From a regular income 40% goes directly to income taxes. If you earn more (>75000) you are going to 50%. Not many people in the US would be cheering if they had to pay that amount of taxes. But you can see, if money is spend good, You will get this in return. Also gasprices are 3 times higher than yours. (1 gallon = 3.78 liters, We pay 2 euro per liter. so that 7.56 euro's =7.87 dollars for 1 gallon) What do you pay? Again these taxes go to infrastructure, bridges, roads etc..

  4. Never research Oostzaan, it's boring af xD
The Netherlands is designed for bicycles, you can almost cycle from one end to the other without leaving a cycling-path xD
And the Netherlands has 17.9 million people, New York has 19-ish million. The state of New York is 3.4 times bigger than the Netherlands. We have to manage available space better.
Just something my autistic brain wanted to know and share xD
28:10 Unless climate change turns the Netherlands back into a sea..

  5. I live in Belgium and our public transport and bikes stuff is pretty close to what it is in the Netherlands. So it's nice to see it from the perspective of an American. When Charlie says he would have to drive at least 30 minutes to even get to a bus, it's funny, cause here's me complaining about the fact that round the corner from where I live (2 minutes walk) the bus only comes every 20 minutes and not every 10 minutes like in other parts around my town.

Riding your bike is just a part of our lives to go to work, school, shopping, to go out in the evening… It saddens me that because of my health I can't ride a bike anymore because there's this beautiful wide bike lane (width of a big truck) with woods on one side that starts around the corner from where I live all the way into town. But luckily I do also have the option of a bus just around the corner too.

  6. Buslines in the Netherlands are usually quite long and pass even the small villages. Every 5, 7,10,12,20,30 minutes or even one hour. Depending on the time of the day. In the evening they drive less. Everyone knows the time schedule. At the end of the line they turn around.👍

  7. Great video but not so great that everyone who likes Holland can easily live here and get a passport. Its overcrowded here. Not because he is American. Most people come from non western countries and things have changed too quick in the last 20 years. Not for the better. 👍

  8. Veenendaal is were I live and it's indeed pretty safe here to cycle but also not. Alot of crazy drivers are here too and when it's raining and when it freeze a lil bit the stones in the city centrum are very slippery even sometimes when you walk on those stones you slide so be always carefull here 😂

  9. When you asked what happens to your taxes in the USA, cause it's not going to infrastructure, I think it's pretty obvious. The police (US police force is enormous) and military. I mean, the B-2 Spirit stealth-bomber costs over $1 billion (that's without maintenance-cost) and it's only flown at airshows. That's one plane. And the US has an enormous military with very expensive hardware.
Pretty sure that's where your taxes went instead of the potholes.

  10. When it comes to infrastructure and traffic, we Dutch are always on top of it. We're always coming up with new things. These cost a lot of money of course… But if it works you get so much in return. And we learned that lesson quite early. Doing nothing is more expensive than doing something expensive. Because you save people's lives, limit damage (whether materialistic or physical), and therefore everything becomes more accessible and inviting to do. This also makes everything much more manageable and controllable. And that makes a city nice to live in. We are also originally a critical people who always have something to complain about. And that also makes things change faster. We are not a people who sit on their asses, but many hands make light work, and no talk, but action! Personally, I am concerned about the Netherlands today. We are increasingly becoming a country in which more and more meetings are held. And where critical thinking is seen as negative and bad criticism. This has never been the case, and if we are not careful, we are entering a future where it will end just as it has in Canada or the USA. Don't complain about anything, just accept it and make the best of it. This should NEVER become the Netherlands. And that is why we must all fight to become once again, that country of criticism that we have always been from our roots. Nothing is perfect, but we should never be satisfied with mediocrity!

  11. For potholes and other problems with our roads, my experience is that when you encounter such situation, and you take a picture, send it to the council, it will be repaired within a few days, or earlier when really dangerous. That contributes to the feel of our roads.

  12. The hole infrastucture of is managed top down and bodem up and the guided by the Rijkswaterstaat and Goverment on State / Provence or City based.

  13. one of the reasons it looks well designed and well kept is that we pay our taxes. Infrastructure is paid from general taxes, and we have many regulations for new developments as well as for refurbishing old neighbourhoods. And as others say, there are issues here too. But do come and enjoy. If you are interested in Dutch engineering, watch the video Hindsight on our water infrastructure. I'm Dutch and even I was impressed

  14. 20:16 tramlines are not safe for people on bikes because your tire can get stuck in it and you fall. this happens mostly with tourists. even tourists from the Netherlands because tram lines are only in a few citys.

  15. The two towers of the railway bridge in Nijmegen, called Het Landhoofd, were built in 1879 initially to defend the bridge, but because canons soon became stronger they were outdated before they were put to militairy use.Because many people walked the bridge and this was dangerous, the towers were rebuilt each to house a family of bridge keepers. These families could live there for free for their service of guarding the entrance of the bridge. In the 1980s both towers got the status of monuments. When the cycling bridge was built, the towers were rebuilt in their original condition – except for the passage through the tower. The eastern tower is now a music practice room.

  16. 16:45 The Jutrijp situation needs a sidenote explanation. Jutrijp is located 2km south of a market touwn Sneek (which is really, really nice btw.) . Those buses are not with destination of Jutrijp , but they are 3-4 rural bus routes to like 20 small villages south of Sneek, that happen to pass Jutrijp on route to the market town (with railway station, highschools, sports clubs, night clubs etc)..
Jutrijp is not the destination, it just happens to be along thoses routes ! And in the weekend there are not 3-4 but 2 bus lines …with some villlages not having transit on that day..
