    I mean going direct to source would seem the most logical choice to me.

  2. Could just be caked on dirt – I’ve seen this before.

    Bigger issue is that the dork disk is out of alignment.

  3. Looks like it was ridden on a muddy road or possible a wet road with road salt. That inconsequential dork-disc looks messed up however.

    Looks like a fine dust. Could be some sort of grease or oil. Probably sprayed on.
    For extremely muddy cyclocross races I’ve heard of spraying Pam on the drivetrain.
    Spray water on it. Dust will rinse right off.

    On a side note, the drivetrain looks in decent condition, if you did go for it, a good clean and some fresh oil and you’ll get plenty of life out of it.

    Dry lube, wax ,some sort of lube coated with some fine dust, Wash it off and start fresh.
    Probably has just been sitting a while.
