I picked up this used Giant Cypress the other day. I think it’s a 2011. I plan to use it for utilitarian riding – trips to the grocery store, riding on vacation, recreational rides. I still have a road bike for more serious stuff.
My previous bike was a Cannondale M300+ with solid a suspension. It was too small for me and giving me some knee pain. So, I sold it and started the hunt for a replacement. I was really looking for a large frame athletic hybrid with a solid suspension. After a few weeks of looking, I wasn’t able to find anything in my price range (under $200). I was even willing to get a junker and repair it, but no luck.
This bike was on consignment at a local shop (Ride Bikes in Charleston, SC). The previous owner had a bunch of repairs done and decided to sell it. It came with new tires, chain, and cables. It looks like the shifters were changed out as well. I think this is a 2011 and they came with twist grip shifters (which I actually prefer, but not enough to change them out). The shop threw in some nice ergo grips that they had in the back. They are some good folks who seem to know their stuff.
I may change out the forks in the future. They don’t bounce too much, but I prefer the solid ride. For now, I like the ride and the little bit of extra weight won’t kill me – I am adding a rack and panniers on the back today. I also ordered a bottle holder and a set of lights. I have new qr skewers on order as well. The old ones are rusted. I wire wheeled them and painted them black so they don’t look too bad until the new ones come in..
If I find the perfect bike and I can get my money back out of the Cypress, I may sell it. I know I won’t get the hours back that I spent cleaning it up. It was pretty dirty and some of the aluminum parts needed/need some buffing.
