I’m visiting my family for a few days and told my sister I had been looking at buying a bike to help me continue to lose weight (and for fun). She told me I could have hers, a Trek FX 3 Disc. It’s 26” and I’m 5’ tall… I tried to ride and it’s awkward, but tbf I haven’t ridden in 20 years. This will be an experience! It needs a little love, but I need to dismantle it to get it on the plane anyway (bought a travel bag and bubble wrap), and I found a bike shop to tune it, too, and help me out.

What do you guys think? Too much bike for me? Any tips on getting started again?

  1. Every time you ride, take a few minutes to practice stopping and dismounting. You’ll exponentially increase your confidence knowing you can quickly stop at any time.

That is a good bike to start. Please Get and wear a helmet, you only have 1 brain. There will be tough moments but don’t give up. Ride at lease every other day. A short ride is still a ride.

  3. You should be good. If anything have a bike shop look it over just as a safety precaution. If and when you get into cycling I would suggest to look into a bike that fits the style of riding and sized to you better. Don’t worry about all the extra bits and bobs for now.

Beyond that learn how to check the spokes if they become loose. I started close to 290lbs and that was the common point of issue. Especially with Trek (Bontreger) wheels.
