I’m 5”4. The specialized site says I likely need a 52cm. I will ride it to make sure it’s comfortable but each company having a different size range is also confusing.
I realize that at $800 I can basically buy a new bike but a dollar saved is a dollar that can go towards other cycling needs. I’m new to cycling, goal is to ride with friends and ultimately do a half Ironman.
I’ve seen quite a few bikes that look a lot older for the same price so I don’t even know what to look for price wise. I don’t want to spend more than $1000.

How much is the new Specialized Allez in your area, I have this exact bike and I wouldn’t sell it for any more than £400
It’s reasonable because these bikes sell for more than they’re worth. Realistically this is a 500.00 bike, but there no such thing as a 500.00 disc brake Allez or CAAD anymore
Im 5’9” i ride a 52cm domane because my inseam is short (79cm) sizing is more about inseam than overall height. You can always make the reach longer, but you can’t make the stand over lower also not all 52 cm bikes are created equally often times sizing charts are off. The best thing you can do is to swing a leg over but I would guess that you need something more like a 50 or 49 furthermore 800 is a bit steep for a Claris bike
800 is slightly overpaying, but if you can get him to 600-700 that would be reasonable
For $800 I’d be looking for 105 components at a minimum
I would get slightly older but better components for 800.
