Lance as the most popular rider in cycling history? Ah, come on, that has to be an American take. And even in that case Greg Lemond would still be wondering.
Sure, the man had some goodwill because of his story as a cancer survivor, and he was a big inspiration in that sense. But you're totally forgetting decades and decades of history in a very european sport here. Ever heard of Fausto Coppi?! Van Looy?! Zoetemelk?! Hinault?! You know, the central european fans in this sport are wildly passionate! : )
