Advice or recommendations would be much appreciated! Totally lost on where to start or look

Have you checked out the Polygons via BikesOnline by any chance? You’d be surprised how good they are. There is a good road bike there for every budget.
If where you live is hilly this gearing will leave you wanting. As far as first bikes go it’s not bad. But you could definitely get away with paying less for a used aluminum bike, or maybe something with more modern features, like 11 speed or disc brakes.
Its not terrible ig though.
I think they are asking too much for a bike this age. Personally I would look for an original soloist/s2 with a reversable seat post that would get you pretty close to a good tri setup with clip on aero bars.
