I ended up paying $300 for a Nashbar 105 cyclocross. The owner said he got it in 2022 and only road it indoors on a trainer off and on for about a year. I don’t know much about bikes, but it seemed like a solid bike that would fit my use case of commuting and occasionally recreational riding. I was in a bit of a rush and it was dark out, so I didn’t realize how bad the rust was until I started looking at the bike when I got home. Not sure if the previous owner’s sweat caused the rust over time or if it’s from where he stored it (he mentioned something about a vacation home near a bay).
I’m okay with a little project to clean it up, especially since it would help me learn the mechanics of the bike, but is the rust/corrosion going to be too much to handle? I’m worried I was a little eager in purchasing it.

This bike has good bones, but is in rough shape.
New rotors, new chain, likely need new cables and housing, new QR skewers, and I’d be looking to swap those disc brake calipers too. If you can do this work yourself, it shouldn’t be too bad. But, a shop is going to charge quite a bit for all these swaps.
The 105 group will be very reliable and those wheels will be bomb proof. But, this bike does need a lot of maintenance.
Not sure what the owner meant when he said he got it in 2022, but this bike is over a decade old.
Agree with what other person said mostly. Price still isn’t tooo bad tho, still oaky-ish price.
Yes it’s 5-10 years old.
Would be maybe worth new cables because those are hard to clean. But you can also just try live/wd40
It shows signs of salt water corrosion from being near the ocean. Was likely stored outdoors.
No need for new chain or rotors. Just clean the chain properly and measure for wear (using a ruler or a tool). Clean the other things yourself with rust remover or scrubbing.
Nashbar bikes were solid, I’ve been riding the steel cyclocross version for 12 years
If you’re willing to do the work and learn as you go along perfect probably most the bones it’s got already good enough
