I sold a crankset from my bike on eBay – absolutely perfect condition and no damage at all. The buyer left positive feedback and then c. 10 days later has requested a return for a ‘damaged or defective item’. They said they installed it on the bike and then it fell off on the first ride and it no longer grips
To me, this looks like they haven’t torque’ed it down properly and it’s slipped and now the threads are stripped? Do I have any hope of arguing my case with eBay or are they going to force me to accept the return anyway?

Do you have photos of the original crank prior to the obviously botched install by the buyer? If so I would contact EBay now and lay out your defence.

Pro bike mechanic here. I see this a lot. The crank pinch bolts haven’t been torqued down anywhere near correctly (it’s stamped on the crank, ffs!) and it’s been ridden until the compression cap has come off, followed by the crank. Complete user error. The buyer is just trying it on.
Your best bet is if you have photos of the crank in perfect condition from the eBay post that you can use as evidence. If the buyer still won’t accept then let eBay decide. Maybe point out the obvious to the buyer, and that at worst his mistake is going to cost him a new l/h crank and cap.

It’s been a while since I sold on ebay but when I last did they were biased towards sellers. I had 10% of sellers raise false issues to the point that I’d just refund their purchases and swallow the cost. The price of covering shipping two ways and having to relist items wasn’t worth it. I gave up selling on ebay because of this

Check their frame bb width. Not 100% but looks like the spindle wouldn’t accommodate the entire crank arm and probably resulted in it stripping the threads.
Edit: looks like their fault.. point it out to eBay too.
