  1. On Shimano Hollowtech crank spindle, this is where the safety pin goes in. It is the little hook thing that goes around the securing bolts on your non drive side. There is a small pin on the bottom of that hook thing and it goes into this hole. It ensures the proper level of engagement between the crank spindle and the crank arm.

  3. Head to si.shimano.com and enter your crank’s model number. The document you’re looking for is the dealer’s manual, not the user manual. It’s expected (by Shimano) that these would be professionally installed but that document will have the instructions.
